Before the advent of MP3s, we used to go to record albums to deal with an artist's take on broader themes. Not every track was a hit single, but if done properly it would be woven into the total experience of the album. We have gotten too quick and clever with our technology and we've reduced true expression to a sound bite. Poetry may be one of the last venues where you can approach a collection that is greater than the sum of its parts.I think that's something Carla Martin-Woods has acheived with this collection. As you read through the work you catch thematic echoes that help you approach the very human issues that she wrestles with in the poetry.
There is loss. There is perspective. There is raging. I titled this review after a line from her poem "Post-menopausal meditation". I think one of the themes that came across to me was from this poem. We don't properly value our strength, our youth, our vibrancy until it begins to slip and then we reach out to grasp it but it is this elusive water. There are other examples of beautiful phrasing, but poems aren't just word tricks. This is an author that is bringing to bear a lifetime of reflection and experience to her work and it shows. The relationships and connections are more than two-dimensional. There was one poem for example ("After ours") where this couple cleans up all the drama and mess in their lives and realizes that there was really no reason to be together anymore. It's a nuanced work.
In Owl Pellets, Martin-Woods deals with the propensity to store up our bitterness, pain, and than "we cough it up, and someone calls it art." There's a lot of that coughing-up going on in the angst ridden, self-absorbed poetry we see being written today. There's none of that here. Thankfully.
If you haven't read Carla Martin-Woods, I'd recommend giving her work a try. I'm sure you'll find some hit singles you'll like, but remember to stay for the whole album.
