In "On the Lisbon Disaster," a thrilling e-original story, New York Times bestselling espionage master Olen Steinhauer, author of The Tourist, introduces the enigmatic John Calhoun, an international security contractor who plays a prominent role in Steinhauer's novel The Cairo Affair.

Before his assignment to the CIA's Cairo office, John worked in Lisbon, Portugal, where he took part in an extraordinary rendition-the apprehension of a wanted individual for interrogation. But from the beginning of the operation nothing goes as planned, and for John, it soon becomes much more than a career-defining moment; how he handles this crisis will define who he is as a person.

On the Lisbon Disaster A Story eBook Olen Steinhauer

This is a short e-read. It was my first e-read, but not my first adventure with Olen Steinhauer. Having read all his books, I quickly jumped at the chance to get into this short piece. It was wonderful, but just made me all the more eager to get my hands on his new book. For anyone who hasn't read the previous works, I highly recommend everything. My favorites will always be series set in the fictional communist state in the days of the cold war. The later works are more contemporary and in every way brilliant. Steinhauer is a slow and meticulous writer, and it's worth the wait as he works on another masterpiece.

On the Lisbon Disaster A Story eBook Olen Steinhauer Reviews

I would read a nursery rhyme if Steinhauer wrote it. He is a master story teller with an elegant writing style. This short story hooked me on page one and I was sorely disappointed that it ended too soon.

It is very hard to find a contemporary writer who is as good as Open Steinhauser. The comparison to John Le Carre that have been made, another genius in the genre, has come even more true in the Lisbon Disaster and the Cairo affair. The last one being his best book by far, but read this one first and you will love the Cairo affair.
Style, mood, economy of words. I used to think that Le Carré alone was capable of narrative finesse & character study that transcended the genre. Le Carré still reigns supreme in my view; his dialogue is sculpted in brutal understatement and toned w dialectical precision & colour. But Steinhauer is masterful, his work addictive, his settings Dantesque. Read his entire canon and look forward to "Old Knives"

By the way... I thought this short piece ended at exactly the right place. Remember that moral ambiguity is the premise here.

But what do I know? I myself am morally ambiguous. o)

The attached photo is totally arbitrary and irrelevant. That's why it's there.
You don't need to use all your fingers, if you count on one hand gripping spy war tales set in Lisbon. This superbly told narrative of a botched rendition accurately portrays a european capital about which few americans have even basic familiarity. The cast of players and their distinctive characters are vividly described and each fascinating in a distinctive way.
A tale so well told you hate to come to the end.

My only complaint abut Olen Steinhauer's books is that I wish he could write them faster. His plots are intelligence, plausible timely, engrossing, and multi-faceted. I am grateful for my work as a speaker because I get to indulge myself on airplanes and hotel rooms, reading his book including this one
Set in post-WW II Europe, the author has been careful to capture what it was like to live in Europe in the 1950s. He avoids, in my opinion, preaching "Communism bad - Democracy good" and focuses, instead, on what daily lives of average persons were like. I liked this enough to buy a couple other books by this author and, after reading those, to by them all. I love the history s much as the stories. AND, I have NOT received discounts or otherwise been compromised in exchange for a favorable review - a practice I find abhorrent. , are you reading this?
A well-written short story that creates an interesting protagonist and a fast paced event. However, the ending is too elliptical. A reader must trust an author to tell a story, but Steinhauer truncates at an unreasonable point. He wants all the attention on the protagonist, but the reader wants, needs, to know what happened in Lisbon. If this is just a teaser for his next novel, it should have been a free sample and not sold as a stand-alone short story.
