if i could give this a zero i would. i don't think i have ever tried to read such a boring book. this is not really a mystery, it is NOT a thriller. i just wanted to yell at beatrice - shut up!

i gave it a good try, really. but after i think about 10-12 chapters i had enough and started skimming. oh god, that was worse...so i skipped to the end to see who did it.

the book made such a horrid impression i don't even remember WHO did it. i have to do have to remember the read the negative reviews; some of which would make a difference if i got the book and some would not.

Sister Rosamund Lupton 8601404268731 Books Reviews

What a thrilling and moving story. Beatrice receives a call that her sister, Tess is missing. She boards a flight home to London to help in the search. In the process, she finds out there was a lot about Tess's life that Beatrice never knew. Beatrice's fiancee and her mother have given up on ever finding Tess, but Beatrice refuses to give up. It took me a while to get used to the different writing style, but I was soon engrossed in there mystery. I held my breath while Beatrice put herself in dangerous situations to uncover the mystery. There is one vital piece of information that the author withholds from the reader until the last few pages and the result is breathtaking and shocking. Amazing read.
I struggled with my overall rating for this book, and finally settled on a so is 4-stars. I found the unraveling of the story complex, yet still clear enough to follow. The suspense level was high, keeping me reading at a quick pace, along with my questions/guesswork at the ending. For all of this, I likely would've given a 5-star, yet the ending wrapped up all to quickly, leaving me with a number of questions, including how much of the are story given to the reader was actually true or imagined. I'll leave it at that, since any more would become a spoiler. I'll still recommend this to friends, and will read other books from the author. Yes, a solid 4-stars from this reader!
This was a clever who-dunnit-mystery/thriller with thought provoking aspects and moral issues to boot!
I loved this book and the way the narrative switched back and forth from story telling to one person, to the next, and then her own narrative, written in the first person. The story was twisty and interesting, the writing was GORGEOUS and I found very little that wasn't wonderful about this novel.
Set in London, Sister is the story of a sister's search for her younger sibling, an art student, who's gone missing. The red herrings, the doling out of clues and the reveals were masterful.
Well done, Lupton!
This mystery probably would have been at least 80% better had it now been written in such an odd manner. The main character narrates the entire plot to her dead (murdered) sister, listing all the twists and turns along the way. What's so odd is that she talks about characters and problems that bother or threaten her, but then later you find out they were not germane to the mystery. Why even bring it up then, if this is a past-tense rendering? It just doesn't make any sense. Also it is all told to a too-good-to-be-true lawyer who keeps talking about a "trial." The police think the sister committed suicide, so if the lawyer is talking about a trial, someone must have been caught then, right? And then it's not a suicide.
I honestly don't know why I kept reading, but the characters (except the non-existent lawyer) were quite well drawn, and the author does a good job of introducing twists and thrills, especially at the end. Although the very end was not developed.
All in all, this could have been a good book had an editor steered Lupton away from the awful concept of having the main character narrate the whole thing to her dead sister.
You will cry so, be prepared for that. And I’m not just talking one or two tiny droplets of tears but the shaking kind of sobbing. The ugly crying. Please! I beg you. Don’t let that stop you from reading this brilliant novel.

This has such a heartbreaking beginning which is cleverly written. Three chapters in and the novel feels as if it’s somehow turned into an autobiography of not just Beatrice (the main character), but also Tess’s (her sister). Then the truth is revealed. Beatrice, is giving a police report describing her sister Tess, who has been murdered. She has to start at where she realized her sister was dead and thus the events breathtakingly unfold to the reader.

According to the police, Tess has killed herself from Postpartum depression after she has a stillborn baby. But Beatrice isn’t buying their reasoning. Tess was an artist in London attending a University at age 21 and she closely kept in touch with her sister Beatrice who lives in New York. Her body is found in a horrendous place. And the pieces of the puzzle just don’t fit together. Both sisters lost their brother when he was young from Cystic fibrosis and were abandoned by their father. It’s clear from the start they both cherished life and would never do anything that drastic to end it. So, she sets out to discover what really occurred to Tess no matter what the cost. Beatrice gets no support from either her fiancé or mother who just wants Tess to rest in peace.

Unfortunately for Beatrice, things come flashing into view quickly when she begins her investigation. Such as

-A creepy unrequited student who takes photos of Tess
-A misdiagnosis from an overworked Psychiatrist
-Drugs found in Tess’s body during her autopsy
– An affair with a married man

And if that’s not enough, just when you get use to shedding tears and the tenacious investigating of Beatrice who is getting close to solving the mystery, the author pulls the rug right out from under your feet. It’s absolutely terrifying. I was so shocked I had to close my book and calm down.

All this is only scraping the top off the latte. It goes downhill fast. The thing that will keep you intrigued is the love from Beatrice’s words for her sister and her telling the story. The choice of prose and use of vocabulary the author writes in is humbling to say the least–not one wasted word. If you’re a beginning writer prepared to be schooled. I promise.

In the end, I saw this novel as a love letter from one sister to another. If we all had someone like Beatrice on our side, maybe, the world would be a better place?
